MOST ASKED QUESTIONS
Failed to start load kernel modules
If you install ArchMerge for the first time from a dvd or usb to your personal computer i.e. your harddisk or SSD, you  will see a red line

failed to start load kernel modules

That is normal.

ArchMerge is ready to be installed on any virtual application like Virtualbox. Those applications can not run if you install it on an harddisk or SSD. After installation and rebooting for the second time these support applications for virtual machines will have been deleted and you will see no more message.

NEED TO KNOW
This concerns all ArchMerge editions
Conky's

FONTS

Conky’s can be activated via conkyzen in XFCE4 and conky chooser in Openbox. Many conky’s are beautiful because they use fonts with copyright on them. In order to avoid any lawsuits in this regard, you should download the fonts yourself. Downloading the fonts is ok for personal use but not for a distribution. You can find the download links in the folder ~/.config/conky/fonts.

There is an alias for you to load your fonts in the system.

alias fc=’sudo fc-cache -fv’

LUA

Starting from ArchMerge 6.1 we have conky-lua-archers installed by default. Lua conky’s should work out of the box.

Many conky’s have three letters in their name. This means that in order to enjoy that conky you will have install LUA support for your hardware from aur. It is best to start with the first one and test if that one works for your hardware.

CONKY FIXED OR CLICKABLE

A conky will always react differently in each desktop environment. The conky’s have been set to the be fixed on the desktop in Openbox. In XFCE you will see that you can click on a conky. As a result the conky moves in front of a window. It is not a problem but you can change this behaviour in XFCE. You will loose transparency. You need to change the code in the conky from

to

Icons
Sometimes icons are not following the chosen theme. That is not due to the icon theme. That is because software engineers are making a hardcoded path to the icon. So whatever icon theme you choose, it will always take /usr/share/icons/example.png. This is hardcoded.

The solution is simple. After installing ArchMerge and after every update of that particular software package, you should run

Here we see HP as an example. There are about 5-6 icons that do need to be changed on September 2017.

After

Termite
79 termite coloring schemes have been added. Change the terminal the way you want it.
You will find these schemes in the folder and also the configuration file.

Plank themes
You can access the many plank themes with right mouse click on the plank with holding in the CTRL key pressed. Since ArchMerge 6.1 we have > 70 plank themes.
XFCE4

XFCE4 has no conky after installation. It is meant to be KISS. You can activate one with conkyzen. If you want it to autostart then you need to add am-conky-session to the autostart applications.

Openbox
Tint2
Up to 43 tint2 themes to choose from. Some will match the arc themes we provide.

Openbox Themes
25 themes
to choose from to make your openbox menu change appearance and as well your windows.

Openbox Configuration
The folder ~/.config/openbox contains the most important files for your system. Check them out and use the scripts that we provide for your advantage. Read and run.

Sardi and Surfn got a major update. More icons, spring clean in the svg code and Sardi Ghost Flexible is back in for Arch based distro’s. Read more about Sardi here.

Boost your system

While testing ArchMergeD desktops we were developing a script to make sure that all cores of our processor are involved in the building and compressing task for applications coming from the AUR.

Added script “000-use-all-cores-makepkg-conf-vx.sh” to speed up compiling your applications from AUR in ~/.config/openbox/scripts. You can find more info about this in this article.

ArchMergeD users will find it on the github.

To emphasize the importance of this tweak I have written a second article about it.

Budgie-git desktop as example of future development
Our goal in Phase 3 would be to install any desktop we want on ArchMergeD. We will perfect this github of ArchMergeD Budgie. We can then use it as a template. Installing bluetooth support or printer support will be the same on any desktop.

You can find the current github at https://github.com/archmergelinux/amd-budgie.

XFCE4
ArchLabs R2-D2 was already heavily interlaced with XFCE4 applications to give users a proper desktop environment. It seemed only logical to supply you the full desktop experience. In this manner we have the vision that linux enthusiasts can start with XFCE4 and get comfortable in this environment. XFCE4 is ideal for starters in linux.

Learning XFCE4, Openbox and i3 would be an ideal learning roadmap of increasing difficulty.

Openbox
We have chosen to have a menu, that is generated on the spot. No need to edit the menu.xml when you add or delete applications. Your menu will automatically change after installing or uninstalling the software. You can choose to have icons in the menu or not. Standard there are no icons.
I3wm
i3wm next gaps is a great way to discover that there are other ways to manage your work. i3wm is for the more advanced and patient linux user. You get a themed and ready to go i3wm environment. The i3wm environment is an awesome tool for work-flow management and will include 10 desktops each with their own specialty e.g web browser on Desktop 1, Editors. Desktop 2, Multimedia. Desktop 3, you get the idea.
